Back to School
LG has finally started kindergarten. She LOVES it. I love it too but it has been a big adjustment for us me.
The biggest adjustment has been packing a lunch for her every day. I am not always on top of the grocery list but now I have to be. LG loves being able to take her lunch every day but begs for hot lunch. I am letting her get hot lunch on Fridays for now. We have a really cool hot lunch program that is local and organic but is also nearly $5 a day so once a week is good for now.
LG's school day is long. She starts at 8 a.m. and doesn't get out until 3 p.m. It doesn't seem to be a problem for her since her preschool day was that long and although she only went 3 days a week it seems to be serving her well. She is getting to be a bit earlier and is sleeping in a little bit so that is very nice for me!!!
The best part is that LG wears a uniform. We are sending her to a Catholic school that her father, all her uncles and her Vove attended. Vove was even a teacher there for awhile! There is a TON of Freitas family history there and I love it. Back to the uniform.....they are the BEST!!!! No matter the weather, I know what she is going to wear. She only has one jumper but I seem to be able to make it through a week without having to wash it. I am sure there will be times that won't be true but for now it is working. I have 2 shirts so I have to wash them every few days but I do laundry that much anyway so it is fine. I truly think everyone should adopt a school uniform.
The only problem so far with school is LG is a little bit bored. I am hoping that within a few weeks of getting settled the teacher will start some more engaging things otherwise I am going to have to figure something out. I am going to start giving her 2 worksheets a night for now because she is begging for homework. They will be easy and fun but I think she will enjoy them.
Transistion to school has been good for us. I am really loving having her in school every day and she is LOVING it. I am still looking for a full time job and hoping that something will fall into place soon. For now, I am using these full days to workout and focus on me. I have a lot to work through and I have waited long enough to do it. It is time!
Good luck to everyone starting school soon!

I remember thinking uniforms would be horrific as a kid, but I LOVE the idea of them as an adult. I'm so glad to hear the year is off to a good start and that you're getting some "me" time in the process. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy kindergarten! What a fun time. And being a teacher yourself, you will be such a great role model for other parents too.
ReplyDeleteI miss uniforms! My daughter had them in 5th grade, and they were so much easier. And I do the same thing on lunches; pack them Mon-Thurs and they eat at school on Fridays. I make them the night before to make the mornings a little easier.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to the LG.. I'm sure she will get in the swing of things. The blessing is how tired they are after a long day at school! It's amazing how exhausted it can make them.
ReplyDeleteHi Lia! I remembered your blog URL!!! My son just started back at school (1st) and he wears a uniform as well. I love it but I learned the lesson last year that a few pairs of pants get holes in the knees much more quickly than one would think!! And whenever possible, try packing the lunch at night. GOOD LUCK to your little girl!! And to you too!
