Will the Luck Run Out?

I am a lucky, lucky girl.  Mostly I am lucky because I have parents who have stepped in and are taking care of Ashley and I in this transition.  Of course, my husband is helping too but we live in Silicon Valley and like most families there isn't enough to totally support our separation.  I want to make it clear that he is supporting Ashley completely and would never take that away.

As this month has unfolded more and more things have come up that I never thought about.  The biggest has been a lapse in our insurance.  I, of course, got sick in the beginning of January and need two prescriptions filled to the tune of $208.  F$%^!!!!  There are the day to day things that you forget about too and they all start to add up.

I have had to be very resourceful in making ends meet because while I could call mommy and daddy and they would send me money, there comes a point in life where I MUST stop doing that.  I have sold some of things I have gotten as a blogger that I have never used.  I have sold clothes that I never wear, etc.  You get it.  Each time I have realized how lucky I have been.  Each time when I was about to pick up the phone and call my parents, something has worked out for me.

Most recently, I had a job fall into my lap.  My friend Jessica passed my name along to take over as Managing Editor of Parenting on the Peninsula as she can no longer do it.  I was practically hired over the phone and since Jessica is my friend she is holding my hand through the transition.  I am forever gratefully to her.

Between that and my Leapfrog gig, I am doing pretty well.  I have a few more things in the pipeline which I need in order to make it on my own.  I am in the running for a long term sub job which I would love.  The scary part is that it is for 5th grade and I have always taught the younger ones!!  I also have a potential interview with a great company that works with education.  Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers!!!

  1. You are going to do great! I know one of these opportunites will work out for you! Trust me, once you learn how to teach, you can teach any grade, you just have to adapt your behavior plan according to their maturity level. You can do it! The best part of 5th graders is they really still want to be friends with their teacher and they don't have too bad of an attitude yet. BTW the worst part of teaching Family Life was my own insecurities. I was afraid of what they would ask me and how I was allowed to answer. It was all fine though, their questions were still simple at this age and didn't involve asking about if sex feels good, etc....

  2. 5th grade is fun! you'll do great, hope you get it. as to the above poster - here's a tip: create a question box. Have the students put their questions in the box, pull out the ones you want to answer and leave the others if it's too tough. (and if you want them to put their initials on the paper, or can decipher their writing, you can address it individually, if needed.)
